The Ferrale estate extends over the hills around Vinci, near the birthplace of Leonardo, the renowned Renaissance master, hailing from this land. From the terraces of its garden you can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and the ancient town center, characterized by the Chiesa di Santa Croce and the Castle of Conti Guidi.

THE SWIMMING POOL

Tuscany is a region rich in structures that can host an exclusive party, a special event or a wedding, but Villa del Ferrale, surrounded by a large and romantic park with trees typical of the Tuscan landscape, is unique because it offers you authentic luxury and serenity in an exclusive blend of art and scenery.
Located in an area overlooking the land below, with two palm trees framing Vinci’s historic center, there is a large swimming pool with a handmade natural stone solarium and a beautiful lawn.

THE GARDEN

A distinctive feature of the garden is the carefully cut hedge that contrasts with the roses which are a delicate pastel colour.
In the garden there are also rare English roses and in a shaded area a collection of hydrangeas.
At the northern edge there is the family chapel dedicated to the Saints Antonio and Francesco, and on a higher level we can find a fine geometric Italian garden with ancient vases containing splendid lemon trees and a small central fountain.

HISTORY

The architectural complex of Ferrale, although it now has the appearance of a nineteenth century building, rises from the foundations of a former building which already existed in a much older era. What, besides memories and documents, makes us think this is, above all, the massive structures visible in some of the Villa’s surroundings.

The latter has always been linked to the name of Leonardo, given that even Anchiano’s home, where the illustrious character was born, once belonged to the vast estate surrounding the manor house.

There are many famous people who have resided at Villa del Ferrale over the years: in 1867 there was the hero of the two worlds, Giuseppe Garibaldi; in 1872 other guests of Count Piero Dainelli da Bagnano, formerly Masetti, then the owner of the estate, were the famous macchiaiolo painter Telemaco Signorini and a scholar of Leonardo, Gustavo Uzielli.

The two friends left us a very nice diary, a four-handed one, of their “GITA A VINCI” in the spring of 1872; this diary was published by Francesca Dini and is an extremely interesting document because it lets us understand the serene atmosphere that breathed in the Villa and in the village of Vinci at that time.

In particular we like to remember two more recent characters, who have been part of the history of Villa del Ferrale.

Count Giulio Carlo Maria Natale Masetti da Bagnano, born in Vinci on 22nd December 1894, spent his youth in a very priviledged environment, where he soon discovered a passion for cars and speed, so much so that he was given, in the town, the nickname “Matto di Vinci”. Masetti bound his name to the famous “Targa Florio” car race, which he twice won becoming a real legend for Sicilians, who called him the “leone delle Madonie”. Unfortunately, during the XVII Targa Florio, on 25th April 1926, our “Count Giulio” near Sclafani Bagni in the town of Caltavuturo died in a mysterious accident.

The other character we want to remember is Nilo Bianconi, who in the 1940s became the owner of the entire complex. Nilo strongly wanted to safeguard its rich natural heritage and started modernizing the company. He went from tenant to direct farming. Under the guidance of Nilo Bianconi, the old systems, in search of optimal use of the land, were replaced by vineyards and olive groves using modern facilities and schemes. Nilo began to study the quality of their products and managed to identify them by bottling them with their own label. This research specifically led the extra virgin olive oil from the Frantoio del Ferrale to represent a production of excellence and inspiring example.

Today this culture, now rooted in the family, has led to our extra virgin olive being appreciated by lovers of quality and excellence all over the world.

LEONARDO UNA MOSTRA IMPOSSIBILE

A project designed and directed by Renato Parascandolo
Scientific Direction by Ferdinando Bologna and Claudio Strinati

The exhibition “Leonardo Una Mostra Impossibile” is an integral part of the visit to Vinci together with the Casa Natale di Leonardo and the Leonardiano Museum. Set in the historic residence of Villa il Ferrale, halfway between the historic center of Vinci and the town of Anchiano, where you can visit the first home of the Genius, the exhibition shows high-resolution full-size reproductions of Leonardo’s paintings.
From the famous Gioconda to the monumental Last Supper, reviewing all the masterpieces of Vinci, the exhibition’s path allows you to observe up close Leonardo’s complete work, all together at a single exhibition venue. An exciting journey through landscapes, faces and enchanting settings.

Created through the collaboration between Rai, the Municipality of Vinci and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the exhibition is held within the Villa del Ferrale, in a splendid setting the digital reproductions of seventeen of the most famous paintings by Leonardo, who right there in Vinci was born on 15th April 1452 and whose universally acknowledged genius is closely linked to the most evocative places in the city.

The project ‘Le mostre impossibili’ made by Rai from 2003, was inspired by a moment of cultural democracy that had Paul Valéry, Walter Benjamin and André Malraux as its pioneers.
‘Le mostre impossibili’ present, in a single exhibition space, in full-scale dimensions (1: 1), the complete work of a painter in the form of high-definition reproductions.

By making them spatially near, works of art distant thousands of miles, achieve an unprecedented “whole picture”, which even the creators of the works could not appreciate. The accuracy of the reproductions is certified by renowned art historians of international reputation.

THE FERRALE OIL MILL

SINCE 1332
WELCOME TO THE HISTORY OF OIL

The historic Ferrale olive groves are located on the hills of Vinci (Florence), about 250 meters above sea level, near the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci. The agricultural tradition of the Ferrale estate has been documented from very distant times, as in a manuscript kept at the State Archives in Florence it is shown that a certain Cecco di Puccio had purchased on 4th March 1332 from the Adimari in Anchiano, houses, land and an oil mill at Ferrale.
Today, as then, the olives, harvested manually respecting the oldest Tuscan traditions, are pressed in the Ferrale oil mill to guarantee a very high quality product. The extra virgin olive oil obtained preserves intact the flavour and natural fragrance of the ripe fruit, giving the consumer the excellent organoleptic and dietary qualities from this healthy and precious nutriment.
